Simon Green has been making records as Bonobo for twenty-five years. Along the way he has built a sound that sits between the dance floor and the living room: downtempo grooves, live strings and percussion, and a ear for collaborators who push the music somewhere new. This fall he put out Distance In Static, his first album since 2022’s Fragments. It’s now on vinyl at High Rhodes Records in Frisco, Colorado, in a Blue Pastel pressing.
The album
Distance In Static is fourteen tracks on Ninja Tune, Bonobo’s home label. It was recorded in Los Angeles, Tokyo and London, with a good part of it finished at Neil Young’s Broken Arrow Ranch in California. The guest list is a strong one: Arooj Aftab, Joy Crookes, Nilüfer Yanya, Ichiko Aoba, Nicole Miglis of Hundred Waters, and Aanya Martin. Lyrics move between English, Urdu and Japanese, and the record works in guzheng recordings and historic Iranian samples. Start with “Fire On The Water” with Arooj Aftab, “Always On Your Side” with Joy Crookes, and the club-ready single “Me And You.”
Maybe the last of its kind
The record lands on Bonobo’s 25th anniversary, and Green has said it may close a chapter. He described it as “probably the last go-around” in this format, meaning an album built around guest collaborators and followed by a full live-band world tour. He hasn’t said what comes next, only that it’s about redefining how to be a musician from here. That makes this a good one to own on vinyl.
